Screamin’ Gus Johnson Provides Another Great Announcing Moment

As avid viewers of NCAA March Madness know very well, you are in for an exciting game if you’ve got Gus Johnson on the play-by-play. The game may be as fun as laundry, but Gus will glue you to your television set. His style, which I would describe as someone announcing sports while being thrown from an airplane with no parachute, draws you in.

So although the first 59 minutes and 30 seconds of Sunday’s Broncos-Bengals match was basically a punting exhibition, the final 30 seconds gave us the most thrilling moment of week one in the NFL. And who else would you rather have behind the mic as good ol’ Gus?

Yeah, it's a lot like that

Yeah, it's a lot like that

Kyle Orton throws to Brandon Marshall, the pass is tipped by Leon Hall and cue the insanity.

It sounds as if Gus started to be choked by Dan Fouts as he let out “Oh, caught!” But it’s those over-the-top calls that makes him one of America’s favorites.

But honestly, this past Sunday was probably only about 70 percent on the “Crazy Gus” scale.

It certainly doesn’t match up with the iconic Gus call where the word “catch” became 12 letters. That clip is long, but you need to fully experience Gus on that one.

For my money, nothing beats “The Runner.” It gives me chills every time I hear it.

“Sssssss-OHHHHHHHH!” is a good one. It’s doesn’t have that uncontrollable screaming, but it works. And don’t forget “HA-HAA!”

And then we go from the crazy Gus to just plain out of his mind. And what exactly is “Peyur!”? I know it’s pure, but that’s just ridiculous. And when you team him up with Bill “Onions” Raftery, you are just asking for a new set of speakers.

But they are all fun to watch and listen to. That’s what Gus Johnson does to every sporting event he covers. He makes you want watch. Maybe the game isn’t that great, but you’ll watch anyway just to see what kind of non-human sounds or hilarious statements he’ll come up with next.

Hearing him scream about MMA, back when Elite XC was on CBS, was high comedy.
