Steven Jackson Accused Of Beating Pregnant Girlfriend

Rams running back Steven Jackson has the reputation of being a beast on the playing field. Few backs run harder than him. But off of it, he is seen as extremely intelligent — he got offers to play in the Ivy League — and giving. On his own Web site, you can read about The Steven Jackson Foundation, his personal community service organization, and how he is an active contributor to charities for breast cancer awareness and childhood health.

But today, Jackson’s image is taking quite a hit as he is being accused of a very hideous crime — beating up a woman who was nine months pregnant. According to TMZ, Jackson’s former girlfriend is claiming that he beat her during an argument in March 2009. And the details can make you cringe a little.

Supriya Harris said that Jackson “became enraged and pushed me to the ground, repeatedly.” She said Jackson “forcibly grabbed my arm and flung me against the door” and “continued to shove me against the door… .” Harris said she was “bleeding heavily” from wounds she received after she was smashed into a door handle.

Jackson took her to a hospital, but reportedly told her to say that her injuries were due to a fall in the shower.

Ten days after the alleged incident, Harris gave birth to their son. She then broke up with Jackson four months later after he threatened to beat her up again. The two have been arguing over child support payments for months.

Obviously, all of this is just alleged right now. I find it odd that we are hearing about this now, 10 months after the fact. But I look at this story much like the recent news with Marvin Harrison. No matter how often we see them on the field and even with all of the attention paid to high-profile athletes 365 days a year, we truly never really know those who entertain us so often.

For Jackson’s sake, I hope all of this is false. He’s the one good thing going for the Rams right now. He certainly doesn’t need to draw another comparison between himself and Lawrence Phillips other than the position and the team they’ve played for.

Through his agent on Thursday, Jackson released this statement on these accusations:

It’s disheartening that I have to address any alleged allegations 10 months later, but I have read the accusations made by Supriya Harris, and they are untrue. The accusations are especially hurtful because those who truly know me know that those actions would be out of character for me.  Miss Harris is the mother of my son, a son that I love and that I willingly support emotionally and financially.  I will address this matter thoroughly through the appropriate avenues, but not through the media.”
