It’s Midnight And In The NFL, That Means One Thing …

HAPPY NO YEAR!

We can skip Auld Lang Syne.

The league locked out its players at midnight on the East Coast, bringing a start to the NFL’s first lockout since 1987. Well before the CBA officially expired tonight, 10 players, including Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Peyton Manning, filed an antitrust suit to block a lockout. Since the NFL Players Association decertified earlier in the day, the NFLPA currently does not exist. Businesses, such as the 32 that make up the NFL, can’t legally lockout non-union employees.

I am trying to understand all of the avenues this divorce could take — free agency may begin as soon as Saturday depending upon a judge’s ruling, and maybe we shouldn’t yet assume there will be a college-player draft this April — but I’m not going to write as if I have a firm grasp on it all. I hardly have a firm grasp on 10 percent of it. There are plenty of blogs out there much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much better suited to give you what you’re looking for … if what you’re looking for is an explanation of what a “no rules” NFL would mean. The name sounds kinky.

My upshot is that this is a dark, monumental day for the most financially successful sport in America, a sport that has ceased business tonight largely because its players and its owners can’t decide on how to share the wealth.
