Official: Gus Johnson Taking His Voice To FOX

It was pretty much assumed, but now it’s a done deal. Gus Johnson, the man of “The Runnerrrrrrrrr,” “Batista with the CAAAAAAAAAAATCH,” and “Ha-HA!” fame, is taking his own special brand of crazy to FOX to be the head announcer in its newly expanded college football coverage.

Fox announced Tuesday that Johnson and analyst Charles Davis will call Big 12, Conference USA and Pac-12 games on FX this season, as well as a conference championship game and the Cotton Bowl. Starting in 2012, they will call games on FOX under its new deal with the Pac-12.

But that’s not all. Once college football season is over, Johnson will move to the NFL side for FOX and still be associated with college basketball through the Pac-12 and the Big Ten Network. In part of his statement, Johnson said:

“I don’t know if this is necessarily a better fit for me (than CBS). … But it’s a bigger stage for me — getting to be the lead play-by-play guy for a network like FOX.”

Translation: “It sucks to be leaving March Madness, but I just got paid, y’all. Come get some of this fliff.”

This is great news for me. Not only does Gus remain in the NFL and college basketball, but he’ll be calling games for the Pac-12 — my home conference — and Conference USA — home of my alma mater. Perfection.

I can’t wait for Gus to scream his head off after Jeff Godfrey turns water into wine.
